Choosing a Receipt Printer for Hospitality: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or LAN?

A good receipt printer keeps orders moving. Discover which connection fits your hospitality setup and why USB is not always practical.

Choosing the right receipt printer for your business

A receipt printer may seem like a small part of your POS system, but during a busy service it is essential. An order needs to reach the kitchen or bar quickly and clearly. When the printer connection fails, delays and confusion follow.

Which connections are available?

Deskly POS supports receipt printers over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and LAN. The best option depends on your floor plan, the distance to the printer and how many devices need to use it.

Wi-Fi: flexible across your business

A Wi-Fi printer works well when multiple iPads are in use or when the printer is not next to the POS. You can place printers in the kitchen, behind the bar or at different production stations without running a cable to every device.

Make sure your network is stable. A reliable business network and a sensible router location are especially important in kitchens with metal equipment.

Bluetooth: ideal for a compact setup

Bluetooth is a practical choice for a small bar, food truck or takeaway business with one iPad or iPhone near the printer. Setup is simple and no network cable is needed.

The range is more limited than Wi-Fi or LAN, so check the distance and avoid placing the printer behind thick walls or large metal appliances.

LAN: a fixed and reliable choice

A LAN printer uses a network cable. This is useful in kitchens where reliability matters and the printer has a permanent location.

LAN is often a strong option for larger restaurants with several stations. The connection is stable and less affected by wireless traffic. Plan the cable route and network equipment location before installing it.

Why USB is not the right choice

USB receipt printers are not supported by Deskly POS. USB usually connects to one specific device, which is less suitable for a mobile hospitality workflow with multiple iPads, a kitchen printer and a bar printer.

Practical checklist

  • Choose Wi-Fi for flexibility across multiple devices.
  • Choose Bluetooth for a compact mobile setup.
  • Choose LAN for a fixed, stable kitchen connection.
  • Test the printer where it will be used during service.
  • Check that the model is not USB-only.
