Connecting a card terminal to the POS

Connect your payment terminal so the amount is sent from the POS automatically. Including a test payment and Tap to Pay on iPhone.

Why connect

Without a connection you retype the amount on the terminal. That works, but every typo is a difference you meet again at closing. With a connection the amount is sent from the POS and the payment is settled on the bill automatically.

Setting it up

  1. 1Go to Settings → Smart POS.
  2. 2Switch on Enable Smart POS.
  3. 3Choose your provider. Supported are SumUp, Adyen POS, Mollie Terminal, Pindirect (CCV), CCV Terminal and Card (standalone).
  4. 4Enter your provider details and save.
  5. 5Tap Test connection, then Test € 0.01 to send a real payment through the chain.

Still working with test credentials from your provider? Leave Test mode (Sandbox) on for as long as you need it — and remember to switch it off before going live.

Integrated or standalone

For CCV and Mollie you choose how the terminal talks to the POS:

  • Integrated — the POS sends the amount to the terminal and gets the result back. CCV uses OPI, Mollie uses the Readers API.
  • Standalone (confirm manually) — the amount does not appear on the terminal; the staff member types it over and then confirms in the POS that the payment succeeded.

Standalone is a fine stopgap if your terminal cannot be connected yet, but the typos stay with it.

Multiple terminals

If you have more than one terminal, add them all and mark one per location as the default terminal. That one is used unless another is chosen explicitly.

Tap to Pay on iPhone

With providers that support it you can switch on Tap to Pay on iPhone. The guest holds their card or phone against the iPhone running the POS — no separate terminal needed. Check status tells you whether your device and account are ready and whether activation has been completed.

Refunds through the terminal

When you process a refund later, the POS tries to send it to the same terminal automatically. If your provider does not support that, the POS says so and you handle the card refund on the terminal itself. See Overcharged or settled by mistake.
