Promotional prices, discount codes and gift cards

Four ways to give a discount, and when to use which: happy hour, a code, a combo deal or a card with a balance.

Four tools, four purposes

  • Promotional prices — a temporary price for a product or a whole category. For happy hour, lunch deals and seasonal offers.
  • Discount codes — a code the guest or your staff enters, with a validity period and a maximum.
  • Combo deals — separate products that together get one fixed price.
  • Gift cards — a card with a balance, redeemed on the POS as a payment method.

Setting up a promotional price

  1. 1Go to Promotional prices and tap Add promotional price.
  2. 2Give it a name your team will recognise, for example Happy Hour.
  3. 3Choose where it applies: to a product or to a whole category.
  4. 4Choose the type: fixed promo price, percentage discount or fixed amount discount.
  5. 5Set a start date and end date, and optionally a start time and end time.
  6. 6Choose the days (empty means every day) and which order methods it applies to (empty means all).
  7. 7Switch on Recurring if it repeats on the chosen days.

The list shows per promotion whether it is Active now, so you can see at a glance what is running on the floor.

A fixed promo price works per product only. To mark down a whole category, use a percentage or a fixed amount — one fixed price per item would mean something different for every product in that category.

You can limit a promotion to Dine in, Pickup or Delivery, so you can run a pickup discount without giving it away at the table.

Discount codes

Under Discount codes you create a code with a percentage or a fixed amount. You can also set:

  • Usage limit — leave empty for unlimited.
  • Minimum order amount — the code does nothing below it.
  • Valid from and Valid until.

The overview shows how often a code was used and whether it is Expired or Depleted.

Gift cards

A gift card is a code with a balance. It is redeemed on the POS through the Gift card payment method; the amount comes off the balance and any remainder stays on it for a next visit.

At the top of the screen you see the outstanding balance. That is not revenue but a liability: value you still owe your guests. Handy to have at hand when your accountant asks.

Loyalty

If you would rather reward regulars than discount for everyone, look at Loyalty. It holds customers, campaigns, settings and birthday bonuses, and shows each customer's point balance and transaction history.
